Chiropractic care focuses on how joints, especially in the spine, affect the nervous system and overall function.

Chiropractors use hands-on adjustments to improve joint movement, reduce pain, and support the body’s natural healing. Poor spinal function can irritate nerves, which may lead to symptoms like:

Headaches and migraines

Neck and back pain

Shoulder, arm, or wrist problems

Hip, knee, or foot issues

These symptoms often result from stress on the nervous system caused by injury, poor posture, or daily strain. Chiropractors diagnose the cause and treat it where appropriate—without drugs or surgery.

What is Sports Therapy?

Sports Therapy is a hands-on approach to keeping your body moving well. It focuses on preventing injuries and helping you recover so you can get back to normal daily activity, work, or sport. It’s based on exercise science and how your body responds to stress, load, and movement.

And it isn’t limited to athletes. If you’ve got tightness, stiffness, or general aches, Sports Therapy can help.

The main tool used is Sports Massage — targeted work on your muscles, tendons, and ligaments to reduce tension and improve how you move.

What Sports Therapy can help with:

Less day-to-day stress and muscle tension

Better flexibility, posture, and range of motion

Easier movement during exercise and work

General improvement in how your body feels

For more details, you can visit the Society of Sports Therapists or the Sports Massage Association.

Jenny graduated with a First Class BSc Honours Degree in Sports Therapy from Coventry University in 2011. She has always had major interests in sport and how the body works. Her main sport being hockey, never one to want to take time off the pitch it lead her towards Sports Therapy as a career. Jenny mainly uses Sports Massage as her main treatment type alongside advising exercises for rehabilitation purposes. She likes to emphasise that Sports Massage can be for anyone, the name is misleading. She describes it as a deep tissue functional massage to get you back to optimum health for either sport, work or lifestyle.

Carina Milne BSc (Hons) DC

I graduated from the University of Glamorgan in 2003 and started my Chiropractic career in Mickleover, Derby. I joined Littleover Chiropractic Clinic in 2020. My treatment techniques are mostly Diversified, with the additional use of activator, drops and blocks. Soft tissue work and exercises are also an essential part of my treatment plans. I take great pleasure in treating patients on both a short term basis and on a preventative care programme.

I am passionate about improving patients’ overall wellbeing, concentrating largely on pain management. Anyone living in pain is not only a physical challenge but can be an emotional challenge too. My aim with treatment is to help with not only manual therapy but also to look at any other advice, rehabilitation or support that may be appropriate to each individual.

I am a member of the General Chiropractic Council and of the British Chiropractic Association.

Dr Michael Whatling, DC, CCSP, MSc, Doctor of Chiropractic. Fellow of the Royal College of Chiropractors. Fellow of the European Academy of Chiropractic.

Born in England in 1957, Mike gained his undergraduate chiropractic qualification from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in 1981, graduating as ‘Best Overall Student’. After gaining valuable postgraduate experience in busy practices in Leeds and Derby, he founded Littleover Chiropractic Clinic in 1988, where he continues to serve as both owner and director.

Mike is proud to have been a participating chiropractor in the seminal multicentre Medical Research Council clinical trial (BMJ 1990; 1995), whose findings highlighted the unequivocal effectiveness of chiropractic treatment. With a long-standing interest in sports injuries, Mike earned a postgraduate certificate in sports injury management (Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner) from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1996, followed by a master's degree in Exercise and Health Science from the University of Bristol in 2003. His Bristol dissertation was subsequently published (co-authored) in Health Education (Vol. 107, No.5, 2007).

Mike has worked at many major national and international athletic events, including as an attending chiropractor to the British team at both the 1999 World Veterans’ Athletic Championships and the 1994 European Veterans’ Athletic Championships in Athens. Closer to home, he has served as chiropractor to Derby County Football Club, Derby Rugby Union Football Club, and Derby Athletic Club. His practice continues to maintain strong sporting ties with the local community and is currently the main sponsor of Derby Hockey Club.

Although no longer working as many clinical hours, Mike remains actively involved in facilitating a smooth-running, friendly and patient-centred practice. He remains confident and excited about its future role in supporting the health of the Derby community. Mike’s three sons are also registered chiropractors, ensuring he’s never short of opinions about how to fix a clinical issue! His principal hope is that chiropractic becomes used in the treatment of an increasing proportion of people with muscle and joint dysfunction and pain syndromes. After more than four decades, his guiding principle remains unchanged: ‘the patient’s needs come first.’

Away from the clinic, Mike’s interests include cycle touring, hill walking and Morris dancing.
